Commercial and consumer software has been transformed over the past decade by the emergence of powerful web/cloud platforms that allow for the far more rapid, secure, and scalable deployment of applications than via traditional means. I argue here that we can achieve similar benefits in science via the development of research platform services. I use examples from the Globus system to illustrate how such platform services can be constructed and used, and discuss lessons learned for scientific software architecture, dissemination, and sustainability.
